Aylezo Ecotint Racing arrived in Shanghai for the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo season opener in good spirits and eager to race. Although the team were faced with several set-backs they soldiered on and ended up claiming two impressive third places in class.

It was evident during first practice that the competition in the Super Trofeo has increased, with more experienced pro GT racers entering the series. Although the first obstacle for the team was the issue of Zen Low’s seat being too large for him. Adding an extra 7-inches of foam secured the driver but still made it difficult to feel the car properly. Add to that some heavy rain and you can you imagine how difficult it is to drive the powerful Lamborghini Huracán LP620-2. But that didn’t stop the two drivers Max Wiser and Zen Low from qualifying in 6^th and 2^nd for both races.

Zen started Race 1 from sixth position and passed a couple of cars on the inside of turn 1, but immediately felt his brakes were spongy. Unable to hold position Zen had to fall back to 6^th place, having to pump his brakes before the actual braking point at every turn, every lap. “It was definitely not a nice feeling having to pump the brakes at over 200kph before the actual braking point every corner,” said Zen.

Handing the crippled car to Max at the interchange the Italian was able to bring the car home in third place. “That was a difficult race with those poor brakes,” said Max. “I had to concentrate extra hard on the braking points and on the cars in front and behind. But our hard work paid off and finishing third was welcome relief.”

The Aylezo Ecotint Racing engineers were able to pinpoint the problem and replace the brake pads for race 2 where Max would start second on the grid.

Quick off the line Max went for the holeshot and was in the lead going into turn 1, when car #12 driven by Afiq Ikhwan tried an ambitious dive on the inside forcing himself over the kerbs and ploughing into the side of Max. Getting airborne, car #12 had damaged the side aero skirt and rear camber of the Aylezo Ecotint Racing #69 car. From that point on it was difficult to drive the car, especially through the high-speed corners. Both Max and Zen continued to push hard and finished again in a well-deserved third place.

Speaking after the race Zen was exhausted but happy about the results: “This weekend certainly had a lot of things we weren’t expecting, but I’m really proud of how the team worked together to fix the problems and how Max and I drove in such difficult conditions to finish on the podium.”
