It was a great day for Team Fydis Aylezo when they set the fastest time in GTC class during Qualifying for the Sepang 12-Hour endurance today. The team, comprising of GT regular Zen Low and two talented single-seater drivers Mitchell Gilbert and Matthew Swanepoel, were on pace throughout the session in their factory supported Lamborghini Huracan ST.
21 year-old Australian driver, Mitchell, clocked 2:07.135 early on during his stint, a time that would remain unbeaten throughout the session. After the Qualifying, Mitchell was once again unbeaten in category when he set the tenth fastest time overall in the top- 15 shootout.
“To be honest, I think we are going to be pretty strong and we are pretty comfortable compared to the other guys. All three of us are doing good average laptimes so as long as we finish the race I think it will be good for us. Lamborghini has given us good support and everything is going really well right now so we will try to keep going as long as we can.”
When asked if they could beat some of the GT3 cars, Mitchell said “At one point I thought I could but we are just about 2 seconds behind so we are pretty much racing mainly by ourselves. We just have to keep pushing the gap and if something happens in front, maybe we can be further up the field than we are now and jump well into the top 10.”
For Matthew, he has a steep learning curve coming into the weekend with no GT racing experience. The 20-year old South African has proved that he is more than capable of taking on the new challenge and have impressed everyone. The youngster was humble in his response and have attributed his good outing by thanking the team.
“I think the whole team has done a really good job over the week and produced quite a reliable car so far which is positive for the race. The pace is also really good and all three of us have been doing quite well so it is looking very positive for the race.
“Obviously I’ve only done about 70 or 80 laps now in a GT car and there is so much to learn. I am making progress and it is great to be learning so much in such a short span of time but I am really enjoying driving this, it is a whole load of fun and I just hope I can keep driving one in the future.”
For Zen, the weekend has been filled with positives and he is happy with the decision to race in the 12-hour endurance. “I am absolutely impressed with both Mitch and Matt. They are both very talented and it was a great decision to partner up with both these rising stars for the endurance race.
“Mitch has done GT once before and have been absolutely on pace and the time that he set got us ahead of all the other GTC cars today. Matt has been on pace and has been improving at each outing, maintaining a very solid pace.
“I too am happy with the car, the crew have done a great job getting us a very solid car with a great setup for both dry and rain. I would like to also extend my thanks to the two Lamborghini engineers, for their great guidance and team spirit this weekend. It has been a long week and we are happy that we have some really great people to work with.
Thank you to Giorgio Sanna from the Lamborghini Factory in Italy for all his support for
this race weekend”. The Sepang 12-hour endurance is scheduled to start at noon on Saturday, 12th
December, ending at midnight on Sunday, 13th.
In South East Asia, Fox Sports Asia will show large parts of the race live through Fox
